Carver Museum ATX

Brand Identity, Exhibit Design, Marketing

Visual communication, branding and graphic applications for reimagined yet historic George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center

The Challenge

The Carver Museum ATX works to create a space where the global contributions of all Black artists are celebrated Yet their public face didn’t reflect just how surprising and dynamic their collection truly is. After partnering with our Founder, Ahmad Thomas,  to refresh and revitalize their museum grounds, they needed to do the same thing for their visual communication system.

The Solution

The cultural institution is housed in a 36,000 square-foot facility that also service as exhibit galleries, dance studio, and a 200-seat theatre. With new educational programing and initiatives on the rise, we worked with their team to make sure their brand voice was reinforced We evolved the logo, developed a new visual design system and wrote a purpose-defining tagline — giving The Carver Museum the tools they needed to properly reintroduce themselves to the world and invite more people to discover the museum.

Proxima Nova

Typeface Selection 

We used a total of two typefaces. 

 

The robustness of Proxima Nova's provides all the visibility we can ask for in a display font and Base Neue's range allow's us  to communicate through a variety of mediums.  

Brand Development

The Carver Museum dwells in the Historic East Austin district. Its  structure features architectural curves, and there was a bias to work the branding of this cultural institution in line with its architecture.

Instead of focusing on the entire building's shape, we find the specific partial form captivating. That's why we selected the top left-hand corner as our logo icon. 

Color System

Color was another opportunity to align the brand with the look, feel and energy of the museum and also reinforce a coded system for all exhibit and educational programing by month.

One of our first initiatives was to redefine the museum experience. With a keen focus on design and strategy, we immersed ourselves in the rich tapestry of cultural arts to craft exhibits that leave a lasting impression. From concept to execution, Ahmad Thomas lead a team of creative minds dedicated to integrating brand narratives into the fabrics of each exhibit.

Small Black Museum is The Carver Museum's annual artist residency. Its aim is to amplify African-American material culture, history and artistic expressions.
